About R.J. Smith

My grandfather William John Smith left school in 1907 and began work as an apprentice in the Jewellery Quarter only to have his chosen career interrupted when he, like many other brave young men of his time, signed up to join the armed forces in WW1.

After the war my grandfather returned to the jewellery trade and later set up in partnership with Sol Peters in Vyse Street in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter trading as Smith & Peters. My grandfather’s expertise and knowledge was passed on to my father Raymond John Smith who, after the death of my grandfather in 1956, carried on the family tradition and continued to develop the business and its reputation for quality and craftsmanship. Shortly after the death of my grandfather, my father acquired the shareholding of Mr Peters, establishing the business as R J Smith Ltd and overseeing a significant increase in the product range and specialised services we offered; which ultimately led to a move to larger premises in 1974.

In 1990 we acquired A Jackson Ltd (est.1880) who had specialised in the manufacture of precious metal cufflinks and gentlemen’s jewellery since 1880. We were delighted to acquire a business with such an historic background and whose products complemented and enhanced our extensive range. In 2002, we also acquired J. Thierry Ltd which enabled us to annex and develop a range of non precious metal cufflinks and accessories to our gold and silver product range.

We are honoured to have had this third generation family business passed on to us and are extremely proud of the fact that we continue to manufacture gentlemen’s jewellery from our premises in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham.  We equally recognise the need to embrace changes in style and production technology to compete in a global market. We are very customer focused and our family firmly believe that manufacturing on site in the UK allows us to offer our customers a more responsive and flexible production capability in conjunction with a strong after sales service.

We hope our website will give you an insight into our products and our manufacturing facilities and hope that you may become another one of our valued customers.   We also take this opportunity to thank you for showing interest in RJS.
